Legend has it that this was formed as a weapon to fight a God and was formed from the bones of a monk…

The PHURBA THUNDERBOLT is triple sided Tibetan ritual dagger or stake. Tibetan meaning of Phurba refers to a stake used for a tethering or a peg used for a securing a tent. While other objects of similar shape can be considered Phurba, it is usually a knife with three distinct segment, one of which is a characteristic three-sided blade or point. The segment & the triple blade represents the three spirit worlds, while the Phurba as a whole symbolizes the “worlds axis” brings all worlds together. Phurba symbolizes the slaying or destruction of foe or obstruction. Phurba is made from various things, i.e. stone, metal, wood, or human or monkey bones or a combination which is considered a powerful elements for driving away evil spirits, the lower part of the blade is said to represent “method” while the handle “wisdom”. These would have been two objects that were vital in the survival of people in this harsh region. The Phurba is fashioned often as an ancient Vedic tool, a stake used to tie together sacrificial animals. It is also regarded as a powerful weapon which subdues evil spirits & negative energies, transforming them into positive forces…

The PHURBA THUNDERBOLT is used against evil spirits by the Tantric practitioner. The idea is not release the spirit out of its suffering & thereby build it to a better rebirth. A spirit (more commonly known as the ghost in the west) is a non-physical being which lingers in confusion between different realms.  By plunging the dagger in it, it will be thrown out of its confusion & thus get the chance to be reborn (probably a lower kind than human realm). Phurba is used as means of destroying violence, hatred & aggression by tying them to the blade of the Phurba & then vanquishing them with its tip. Phurba also used in the ritual slaying of negative emotions, such as anger.  PHURBA THUNDERBOLT is regarded as possessing magical powers & is an essential artifact used sacred mask.  Therefore Phurba is not a physical weapon but a spiritual implement & should be regarded as such, the Phurba were traditionally used for a use of hunting down the demons, certain demons however, are immune to attack from earthly weapons. The Phurba as an implement is also directly related to Dorje Phurba or vajrakilaya, a worthy deity of Tibetan Buddhism who is often seen with his consort Dorje Phagmo or Vajra Varahi.  Vajrakilya, or Kila means something sharp, & something that pierces -a dagger that is so sharp it can pierce anything, while at the same time nothing can pierce it. That is the quality. This sharp & piercing energy is what is used to practice & out of the many infinite, endless vajrayana methods this happened to be one of most important methods.
