The name of this stone comes from the village of Shunga not far from the Zazhoginskoy mine.  Shungite has unique mineral properties.  The solid possesses sorption, catalytic and antibacterial properties.  It has the ability to absorb and neutralize high frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.

The name of this stone comes from the village of Shunga not far from the Zazhoginskoy mine.  Shungite has unique mineral properties.  The solid possesses sorption, catalytic and antibacterial properties.  It has the ability to absorb and neutralize high frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.  It has been known of for centuries in Russia where people would bath in water from the area for its curative properties.  It is the presence of Fullerenes in Shungite that generates much of the interest in the material.  Discovered in 1985, a Fullerene is a molecule of carbon in the form of a hollow sphere, ellipsoid, tube, or other shape.  Only minute quantities of Fullerenes, in the form of C60, C70, C76, C82 and C84 molecules, are produced in nature.  Hidden in soot and formed by lightning discharges in the atmosphere.  The Fullerene family, and especially C60, has appealing photo, electrochemical and physical properties.  These properties can be exploited in various medical fields.  In 1992, Fullerenes were found in Shungite from Zazhoginskoy.
