Hydrated calcium sulfate. In hot arid deserts, water evaporates from shallow, salty basins. Under these conditions Gypsum can grow around grains of sand to form flower like clusters of flat bladed Selenite crystals. They form rosette shaped clusters called Desert Rose. Other names are Sand Rose, Rose Rock, and Gypsum Flower. The name Selenite comes from selene, the Greek word for moon. Some would refer to the clear material as Selenite and other colours as Gypsum.
